A cancer expert whose medical assessment of the Lockerbie bomber helped lead to his early release has been quoted as saying the Libyan could live for another 10 years.Last year, Karol Sikora examined Abdel Baset al-Megrahi for Libyan authorities and estimated he had three months to live. Al-Megrahi, who has prostate cancer, was freed from a Scottish prison on compassionate grounds and sent to Libya.
He was released last year with doctors saying that he had months to live. It was told that his release was on humanitarian grounds. He's already outlived his initial estimates.
Lockerbie sure was a different era. Could you imagine a terrorism suspect sheltered by a foreign government for several years, finally being released to a third party and sent to jail only to be released on humanitarian grounds?
ReplyDeleteNowdays, Qaddafi would be dead, Tripoli in smoldering ruins, and Basset in Guantanamo where nobody would even know whether he was sick or not.
Lemme see...1986...Tripoli and Benghazi lots of Mk80 series bombs, guided and dumb, rained from the skies.
ReplyDeleteHappened to do a serial blogging gig on that...Yep, I was there and that was part of the overall "send him a message, we've had enough!"
Wasn't supposed to be there, but the story begins with sailing to the IO and ending up in the Med...right in the thick of that operation in case you're interested in a first person view.
