Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has been charged with possession of a controlled substance -- codeine syrup -- after being arrested at his home in Alabama on Monday, authorities said. The 24-year-old former LSU star and the No. 1 draft choice in 2007 was arrested as part of an undercover narcotics investigation, said Mobile County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lori Myles. She would not say what led to his arrest. She said he did not have a prescription for the codeine.
Myles told reporters that several people were in Russell's home at the time of his arrest but Russell was the only person taken into custody.
Russell cost the Raiders nearly $30 million. He never even sniffed a 50% completion percentage. Now, his NFL career is effectively over at 24 years of age. He may still resurrect his career in Canada and the UFL. Still, for now, he enters the conversation with Ryan Leaf as the biggest NFL bust.
One day, we will be having this conversation about Tyrelle Pryor.
ReplyDeletePryor of OSU. I'm smelling some Wolverine bias from you.
ReplyDeleteThat's right. And for the record, I still have dents in my coffee table from that debacle in Champaign last season.
ReplyDeleteBut that doesn't change the fact that Pryor is no more a pro-style QB than Russell was.
That being the game that was the beginning of the debacle known as the 2009 football season for Michigan football.
ReplyDeleteI won't try and play amateur scout on Pryor though I think that no one will be as bad a bust as Russell.

I don't think that game was the start of the debacle, it just made everyone aware that the real start of the debacle was hiring Rodriguez in the first place.
