Obama Stands Up for Government

This will be the line most talked about in President Obama's commencement speech from yesterday.

President Obama took aim Saturday at the angry rhetoric of those who denigrate government as "inherently bad" and said their off-base line of attack ignores the fact that in a democracy, "government is us."

Obama used his commencement speech at the University of Michigan to respond to foes who portray government as oppressive and tyrannical -- and to warn that overheated language can signal extremists that "perhaps violence is ... justifiable."

President Obama is certainly racking up statements that will be used against him in ads, speeches, and in debates, and this is one. This past week President Obama had another when he told Americans that at some point you've made enough.

  1. Which statement, the one where he decried people who think violence is justifiable or the one where he criticized his opponents for equating tyranny with them losing an election?

In any case, I'm somewhat disappointed that U of M waited until after I graduated to put more effort into landing commencement speakers. We had some real nobodies back in my day.

  2. No, the one where he disagreed that "government is inherently bad".
