Health Care Debate Stuck in Neutral

Let's start with this story.

House Democratic leaders still do not have enough votes to pass health care reform, the chamber's top vote counter said Sunday, even though the administration is aiming to have the bill passed this week.

The reality check came from Rep. James Clyburn, the House Democratic whip.

"No, we don't have them as of this morning, but we've been working this thing all
weekend," Clyburn, D-S.C., said.

Despite the challenge of corralling wavering Democrats, Clyburn joined with other Democratic officials in saying he was confident the measure would pass, echoing comments from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Saturday.

Where are we at with health care reform? We're in the same place we've always been. The Democrats don't have the votes. We're still not sure what will be in the bill, how much it will cost, and how it will be paid.

Worse than that. All of these decisions will be decided behind closed doors. So, any and all news is entirely based on speculation. All of the supposed head counting and prognostication comes down to guesses, second hand leaks, and pure speculation.

Beyond that, how is that any different than the debate three, six and nine months ago. Everything that's happening now was happening all throughout. Yet, news folks are on television calling this riveting, fascinating, and exciting. It isn't any of that. It's mind numbing. The same debate, story, and narrative is being recycled over and over and we all pretend as though there's something new about it.
