Rush's Bid Opposed

The head of the Player's union in the NFL wrote Commissioner Roger Goodell in opposition to Rush Limbaugh's bid for the Rams.

NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidify the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

In an e-mail to the union's executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh's bid, Smith said, "I've spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred.

The article goes on to say that seven players have publicly come out against Rush's bid to buy the Rams. Rush was always a controversial figure in and of itself. He became very controversial in the NFL following his racial comments regarding Donovan McNabb.

This is a tough call. I don't think that Rush is a racist though he certainly made several comments that are racial. Whether it's right or not, if this move divides the league, it's not a good idea. Rush has amassed many enemies in his life and many of them can stir the pot to derail his bid. The good of the NFL is more important than the good of Rush Limbaugh. It appears his bid is going to split the league. In that case, it's not good for the NFL, whether it's fair or not.

  1. Rush must hate white people then---because that is what the horrible town of Rio Linda is stocked with---and he takes careful aim at them whenever possible.

This Rio Linda sign, when I was young, used to have a spray painted portion put there by the locals which said "whites only". I doubt Rush is any more racist than any other isolated white rich man. He's really just a foul joker. Isn't he?

  4. Justice Clarence Thomas, who honored a special invitation to wed Rush with his last spouse Marta, must surely be a racist too.......

This country is being torn apart, not by conservative racists but by PC liberals hiding behind the false facade of "equality, compassion and freedom of speech".....just as long as one agrees with them. They are the true racists, not the Rush Limbaugh's of the world.

  5. Racial comments vs. racist...there is a huge difference.

I don't watch football, but there is no reason Rush shouldn't own a team. If the player's don't like it, they can pony up the money and buy the franchise themselves.

Who do they think pays their enormous salaries...other players, or the team owners?

  6. NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith is either very short-sighted or an idiot.

Limbaugh is no racist and St. Louis could use the transfusion of cash and excitement that Limbaugh could bring the the Rams; a team with one of the weakest records in the NFL.

Supply and demand my friend. There's a much bigger supply of fools with too much money on their hands like Mark Cuban and Dan Snyder than there are unique athletic talents like Bart Scott and Donovan McNabb. I mean, that *is* why the Rams are threatening the 2008 Lions record.

You think Rush is going to bring about excitement? Is he going to be returning punts or something? As far as infusion of cash, I doubt it. If Rush is anything like Marge Schott (which he is) the last thing I can see him doing is spending money on that team. Roger Goodell must have nightmares of the contract holdouts that Rush will cause, not to mention all those "conduct detrimental to the league" fines he'll rack up with his radio show.

The fact is, the NFL business model requires a minimal of controversy, whereas Rush's business model is built on controversy. I can't think of any two more diametrically opposed business interests.

  8. I dont think Rush would be good for the league. He has made a lot of racist comments over the years, and the NFL deserves a higher class of owner.
