Sarah's Palin's decision to quit as Alaska's governor at the end of the month left political observers scratching their heads and wondering, is this the beginning of Palin's run for the the White House or the end of her political career?
That snippet is a microcosm of what the news: print, television, radio, and internet will be filled with for the immediate future. We all know that Sarah Palin just announced her resignation. We also know what her reasons are.

Now, we can take her at her word or we can speculate endlessly. Most have chosen to speculate endlessly. The endless speculation is useless, very boring, and totally without merit. Only Sarah Palin herself knows why she resigned. She gave her reasonings in her presser. If one doesn't believe her, they are either a mind reader or engaging in a useless exercise.
Worse than that, there is now endless speculation about her potential future, or lack thereof. This is even more useless since no one knows what her future holds, not even Sarah Palin herself. Yet, we are in for days of endless speculation. We're likely to have people hyper analyze her every word, action, and movement over the last several days, weeks, and months. There's a report that Palin met with the junior Senator from Alaska, Mark Begich, and didn't tel him of her plans. What this actually means is totally unclear. Andrea Mitchell claims that "sources" tell her Palin is out of politics for good.
One of those source is likely NOT Sarah Palin's brother who mentioned nothing of the sort in his interview.
So, we're even for an endless stream of talking heads weighing in on all sides to speculate endlessly over what it all means, and what her future holds. None of it, mind you, will in any way mean anything of substance. Everyone will engage in a useless exercise in which they try and make predictions of the future, and the distant future. There are very few things worse than endless speculation. It isn't news, and that's what we're in store for over the next days and weeks.

In the middle of that speculation we'll get some more news. That will lead to even more endless speculation and so on and so forth. So, watching the news will be painful the next few days and weeks.
I like what Josh Marshall said: "Either Palin is resigning ahead of some titanic scandal (which should emerge in short order if it exists) or her resignation was triggered by an even more extreme mental instability than we'd previously suspected."
ReplyDeleteSeriously, did anyone see any nuggets of real information in all that rambling? Part of the "schooling" I suspect she'll be getting over the next couple years will involve things like communication skills. Messaging. Speech writers.
I ADORE her...and yes, I've actually given $5 to her PAC. She is the best thing ever to happen to the Democratic party...PLEASE don't go away, Sarah!

ReplyDeleteYou complain about endless speculation yet that is exactly what you do in half of your "prediction" pieces on your blog.
ReplyDeleteBe honest. You don't like it because you love her and the media covering it for so long is just going to annoy you that the person you think should be President in all likelihood now won't be.
This is a good lesson for you.
Now, you're speculating about my thought process. I don't love her. I've said over and over that I find her endlessly fascinating and I do.
ReplyDeleteToday, I had two investigative pieces. A news story about her. An analysis about her.
Then, I had a provocative piece about just how fragile Obama's domestic policy is, and an analysis piece about the treasury bond and the debt. If that's endless speculation, then so be it.
There's a huge difference between what I write and endlessly trying to predict what will happen in three years.
The reason I hate it is because it is long, annoying and totally without merit. Who cares? Nothing is going to happen today and so the endless speculation is a bit long and annoying. If I loved her, I would be riveted by the coverage and saying that Bill Kristol is a genius.

1. If you're leaving your elected position with more than a year to go because you can't handle negative publicity, personal attacks and GOP back-biting, how could you possibly handle the rigors of running for president -- much less being President?
2. How can you say you didn't take a "quitters way out" when you just quit?
