World:
In Urumqi, China, clashes occurred between the minority Uighers and state police.

Police shot dead two Uighur men and wounded a third Monday on the streets of Urumqi, where tens of thousands of troops are stationed to restore calm a week after deadly ethnic riots raged in the western Chinese city.

Police said the three men attacked them when they tried to pull them off a fourth Uighur, whom they had attacked with knives and rods. A government official in Urumqi who described the attack would give only his surname, Fan.


In German, 89 year old John Demjanjuk will finally see his day in court for alleged Nazi atrocities.

German prosecution yesterday charged John Demjanjuk with involvement in the murder of at least 27,000 Jews at the Sobibor extermination camp during World
War II. The court decided the 89-year-old was fit to stand trial for his alleged participation in the mass killing of Jews orchestrated by the Nazis while he served as a camp guard. Advertisement

In 1988, the Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk was sentenced in Israel to death, but then acquitted in 1993 by Israel's Supreme Court of being the notorious "Ivan the Terrible" at the Treblinka death camp. Now he stands accused of being part of the death machine at another camp in Poland - Sobibor.

In Hondurs, deposed leader Jose Zelaya issued an ultimatum.

Deposed Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya on Monday gave the interim government that ousted him an ultimatum: if ongoing negotiations do not restore him to power, he will consider the talks failed and resort to other means.

Zelaya's remarks came at a news conference in Managua, Nicaragua. He did not elaborate on what other means he might explore.

The statement puts pressure on the next round of mediation between the two sides, expected to take place Saturday in Costa Rica.

In Florida, the shuttle was delayed for the fifth day in a row from launching. Also in Florida, arrests were made in the murder of Byrd and Melanie Billings, the couple that adopted 12 kids with developmental problems.

This afternoon the President nominated Dr. Regina Benjamin for Surgeon General.
