There will be a lot of construction work on the harbors prior to the Olympics and then after the Olympics. If the Park District does count on the money generated from the harbors for their various programs, then how many programs and jobs will be eliminated? I don't believe the City has come clean with all the facts.

I live on the Northwest side of the City and I don't see very much money being spent in my neighborhood for improvements. I feel it was a typical City scam to pave Washing Park when the Olympic comittee toured the park. If they were not taking a tour, those roads never would have been paved. Take that Olympic money and use it to fix up the neighborhoods.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3098264341625381422.post-43632986387046675042009-08-24T18:57:12.265-07:002009-08-24T18:57:12.265-07:00I live in North Kenwood. Politics aside, who REALLY believes the Olympics will create a deficit for the City? Gentrification? That ship sailed ten years ago! Open your eyes. There is some merit in the argument that the remaining stadium will overwhelm Washington Park and the Park District budget. There is some merit in the argument that boaters will be inconvenienced for a year. Deal with the REAL issues. These other arguments are weak, petty and ridiculous. Deficit left for the taxpayers? Get real!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3098264341625381422.post-60279967349970526492009-08-24T12:26:42.151-07:002009-08-24T12:26:42.151-07:00How about we furlough each member of the City Coun...How about we furlough each member of the City Council to help pay for the debt of games that we know we will be stuck with after we unfortunately get stuck hosting the games? It won't pay for the overages in cost, but it would give the taxpayers of the city some satisfaction to see the people that simply do the Mayor's bidding be out of jobs! Oh yeah, let's furlough the Mayor indefinitely too!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3098264341625381422.post-60481522078028987342009-08-22T02:07:58.935-07:002009-08-22T02:07:58.935-07:00Everyone YOU know may not want alternatives to cor...Everyone YOU know may not want alternatives to corporate healthcare but there are plenty of us that want and need a government based option. Medicare is government healthcare that is successful and no one is talking about that. Heathcare is expensive due to the culusion of providers and insurance companies to make it expensive and reap huge profits.

But this was about the games in Chicago and Daley is looking for the biggest shit sandwich he can find to crame down our throats. Apsolute power corupts absolutly. Until the city council starts doing it's job he will continue to use this city as his pot of gold to solidify wealth to the connected families at the expence of the average citizen.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3098264341625381422.post-69812342026318343472009-08-19T20:32:36.940-07:002009-08-19T20:32:36.940-07:00Conservatism and libertarianism are "not legi...Conservatism and libertarianism are "not legitimate" political philosophies.

Well, well, well...talk about an elitist attitude.

Yes, I am comparing the two. Everyone hates Obamacare and he's trying to ram it through anyway. Everyone hates the Olympics here and Daley's trying to ram it through anyway. You can pretend as though Obamacare isn't hated by everyone but that won't make it so.mike volpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02999118519606254362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3098264341625381422.post-66659576208330599662009-08-19T20:04:51.262-07:002009-08-19T20:04:51.262-07:00Really, "like what Obama wants to do in Washi...Really, "like what Obama wants to do in Washington" you are comparing this 2016 Olympic set up of the Citizens of Chicago for another Mayor Daley boondoggle to healthcare reform? What nonsense, stick to the facts. Libertarianism and conservatism are really what you want to talk about and they are not legitimate philosophies for governance. Remember your Civics class? Government in a democracy functions at the consent of its citizens and is to provide opportunity by helping its citizens to be empowered through education and security and infrastructure. Giving someone an education or good health and a planet that is not a struggle for survival to live on makes them more productive. Libertarians argue that giving anyone anything erodes their independence and liberty. They often like to misquote Benjamin Franklin at this point. Libertarians and Conservatives intellectual constructs are bankrupt, as they have bankrupted the country with the past 30 years negligence of the public infrastructure, (deregulation of financial institutions the environment and deconstruction of Government oversight and its ability to deal with national emergencies for example) and putting us on the hook for $3 trillion for the Iraq war. Your Ownership Society has filled the country with empty and foreclosed homes and instilled a culture of greed and gullibility of the public such that it is as if we Americans are just a box full of puppies hoping to ride the next destructive boom or cheer the troops while we are told to shut up and go shopping. Ha...Taken from the Chicago Park Districts web site:
Harbors generate more fees paid to the Park District than all other fee-based revenues
combined, including day camps, after-school programs, classes, golf courses, and
parking. Harbors currently generate over $12,000,000 of income per year, which is
used to staff and maintain parks city-wide. This amount is roughly equivalent to 30 new
playgrounds, 35 miles of new bike trails , 206 full-time park supervisors, or 690 part-time
recreation leaders.
Harbors are owned by the public and are one of the reasons that the Park District has
been able to hold property taxes for parks level for the last three years.
If the Olympics come to Chicago, what do thay plan to do with all the baoters from DuSable, Monroe and Burnham Harbors. Their plan to build a new harbor at 31st street will not accomadate all the boats that will be displaced because of the Olympics. What is their plan for the boaters who are not reassigned to the new harbor?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3098264341625381422.post-24525152735084061972009-08-18T18:46:49.549-07:002009-08-18T18:46:49.549-07:00Brilliantly stated.
